Dallas Cup - US Under 20s take care of Tigres

The US Under 20s kicked off their final group match of Dallas Cup XXXV on Wednesday night only needing a draw to win Group C and advance to the semifinals.  In fact, a one goal loss would even see the Americans advance, but Tigres weren't going to make it an easy night for their hated rivals to the north.

It was a chippy opening unsurprisingly as there were several whistles in the opening minutes.  Would one expect anything else from a USA-Mexico tilt?  Two Tigres players had to seek medical attention in the opening six minutes!

The Americans had to defend a few dangerous set pieces in the early going, but were up to the task not giving Tigres an inch.  It did flip the field in the favor of the Mexicans though for a few minutes.

The best chance of the opening half hour fell to the US off a corner kick but Benjamin Lopez headed just over the crossbar.    The Americans were slowly taking control and just before halftime they would break through.  Rubio Rubin ran thirty yards down the right side before cutting inside on his left foot.  He got to the top of the eighteen before firing a low shot near post that beat the Tigres keeper easily.  1-0 to the break USA.

The US really came out of the locker room flying pressuring Tigres all over the field and dominating the opening minutes.  Could they keep this pace the entire half?  Tigres were unable to match this level.

The Mexico side slowly worked their way into the match and evened things up by the hour mark.  They still trailed by a goal but they were beginning to at least get some attacking time.  The Americans were very comfortably managing the lead knowing a draw was good enough.

The US should have put the game to bed in the 70th minute.  A nice buildup led to a square ball to a wide open Romain Gall in the middle of the box.  He wound up and hit it first time blazing it just inches over the crossbar.

The Under 20s had to dodge a couple f late set pieces, but ended deserving winners on the night 1-0.  They win Group C and now move on to Friday's semifinals at the Cotton Bowl.
