Cortiba and CF Monterrey book places in Dallas Cup Final

Good Friday at Dallas Cup.  Personally it is my favorite day as we get two monster elimination games for the price of one!  The Dallas Cup Super Group semifinals.  Tonight were treated to a pair of juicy matchups as Everton squared off against unbeaten Cortiba followed by defending champions River Plate facing CF Monterrey.

Cortiba 1 Everton 0
This was a very quiet game to put it simply.  The offensive chances could have been counted on one hand with Everton not even producing a shot until injury time at the end of the match. Neither side did much of anything for over a half hour and then Cortiba would score on the first shot from either side in the 35th minute.  A low cross from Luccas Barre was knocked home by the left foot of Elandro da Silva.  It was basically a yawner from there with Cortiba in control and Everton barely getting a sniff of the Brazilian penalty area.

CF Monterrey 1 River Plate 0
Thankfully this was a much more entertaining match.  We saw more attacking soccer in the opening five minutes than we did in the entire previous match.  River Plate clearly had designs on advancing to defend their championship from last year, but CF Monterrey were in fine form and had other ideas.  Both sides saw big chances go begging in the second half.  River Plate had an Emanuel Ventos header well saved by Edson Resendez while Obed Martinez fired just high for CF Monterrey.  Finally we got the goal the game deserved in the 90th minute as Carlos Rodriguez headed home to the delight of his teammates.

So it will be CF Monterrey against Cortiba in Sunday's Super Group Final of Dallas Cup XXXVI.  Both sides are playing wonderfully and it should be quite the final.
