US Women win Algarve Cup with 2-0 win over France

Consider this one putting a team in their place. France has been getting a bit upity lately stringing together a long run of great results including a recent win over the Americans in Paris. Today, in the finals of the Algarve Cup, the US Womens National Team sent a clear message that the US is still the best in the world. As the World Cup approaches in a couple of months this game was a big one and the US stood tall winning the final 2-0.

An early goal set the tone in this one. The US Women were clearly the more motivated side and came out flying. A perfect Lauren Holiday free kick was headed home by Julie Johnston in the 8th minute of play. A nicely executed set piece, but not the best set piece defending from France at all. It was Johnston's first goal for the United States senior national team.

Just before halftime the Americans scored the dagger as a wonderful individual effort from Christen Press was rewarded. Press blew down the middle and parted the French defense before slotting home. A great goal giving the US Women a 2-0 lead at the break. The second half was a very workmanlike effort from the Americans as they managed the game nicely with their comfortable lead. The last hope for France came in the final ten minutes of play as they earned a penalty kick and an opportnuity to pull within a goal. Hope Solo was more than up to the task as she moved to her right and easily pushed away the spot kick from Delannoy. Well read and message sent.  We rule and Hope Solo is back!

Another Algarve Cup title for the US Womens National Team. Their tenth Algarve title in fact.  Three straight shutouts to end the tourney and some nice momentum heading into the upcoming FIFA Womens World Cup.
