Tim Cahill header leads NY Red Bulls past Galaxy

The two "big boys" of MLS met for their only matchup of the season on Sunday afternoon.  It definitely was not the prettiest of games, but it came right down to the death as a late Tim Cahill header propelled the New York Red Bulls to a 1-0 victory.

The win keeps NY on top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 7-4-3 record.  It was the third loss in four games for the Galaxy as they sit third in the Western Conference behind Portland and FC Dallas.

Landon Donovan was in good form early and got the visitors off to a solid start.  Red Bull centerbacks Jamison Olave and Markus Holgersson stood strong though and NY got their feet underneath them. New York almost took a lead to the break but AJ DelaGarza cleared a Fabian Espindola shot off the line just before it went in.

The second half was a much more even affair as New York pressed their home field advantage.  The Galaxy looked to have taken the lead in the 90th minute only to see a Robbie Keane header fly just inches wide before Cahill claimed the winner just a minute later.

Elsewhere, the Seattle Sounders and FC Dallas played a wildly-entertaining match on the west coast Saturday night.  The Sounders prevailed 4-2 against a Dallas squad that was missing their top three players in David Ferreira, George John and Andrew Jacobson.  Eddie Johnson had two goals and an assist to lead Seattle.
