Portland was the latest to receive an MLS franchise and will become the 18th team joining MLS play along with Vancouver in 2011. The team will be named the Portland Timbers and will immediately begin a rivalry with neighbors Seattle Sounders FC which opened their MLS play last night.
The Timbers will also keep their Portland home at PGE Park, but will no longer share it with the Triple-A Portland Beavers baseball team. City officials approved a financing deal last week that would renovate PGE Park for soccer only.
Longtime bidders St Louis were once again rejected, but MLS commissioner Don Garber said they would be considered for the 2012 expansion along with Ottawa. The Philadelphia Union will join the league next year to bring MLS to 15 teams.
