MLS Roundup after three weekends

Well it has certainly been an interesting start to the 2014 MLS season. Injuries, CONCACAF Champions League and just plain rust have distorted the standings so far. But will they shake themselves out over the coming weeks?

The Western Conference shows FC Dallas on top followed closely by the Seattle Sounders. I don't find it quite as surprising as most that FC Dallas leads the way at this point. They always start fast and the players are clearly energized by new boss Oscar Pareja. Throw in a favaroable home schedule and FC Dallas have seven points from three matches thus far. The Seattle Sounders have six points from their three games and look to be quite solid this year. If they can notch some road wins lookout as they are legit challengers for the top spot in the west.

Both Real Salt Lake and the Vancouver Whitecaps have five points to show from three. Both teams will be happy with their start, especially RSL as they also had to navigate a Champions League tie. The LA Galaxy are once again off to a slow start with only a draw from two games with RSL. Expect them to bounce back though behind the talents of Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan.

The Eastern Conference has three teams that are a perfect two wins from two. Toronto FC, Columbus Crew and the Houston Dynamo lead the way. Houston have won two home games against less than stellar competition. Columbus have also notched a pair of home wins and they will put their perfect record on the line this weekend as they travel to face the Seattle Sounders.

After being the talk of MLS during the offseason, Toronto FC have not disappointed winning their opener in Seattle and then shutting out DC United. Sporting Kansas City and the Philadelphia Union have a win, loss and draw so far. Both are expected to have solid years led by talented rosters.

DC United and the Montreal Impact bring up the rears and look to have real claims to being the two worst sides in MLS this year. We'll see if either can get their first win this weekend. DC United have three straight home matches on the schedule so they better take advantage of the home cooking at RFK or face a long, long season.
