FC Dallas scores late to beat Seattle Sounders

A huge three points were on the line Wednesday night in Texas as FC Dallas hosted the Seattle Sounders.  The two postseason bound sides are jockeying for playoff positioning with the Sounders having sights on the Western Conference championship while FCD are trying to catch Real Salt Lake for third place. Seattle were closing out a grinding road trip while Dallas were returing home after a tough defeat in LA on the weekend.

It was the home side who would jump out to the fast start.  Exactly what the Sounders were trying to stop was for Dallas to get their speed and counter game going.  Even without the talented Fabian Castillo, who missed the match due to injury, FCD were flying all night long with David Texeira and Andres Escobar.  It took only 8 minutes for David Texeira to delight the home fans with a goal as Escobar flighted a ball over Seattle defender Chad Marshall to the running Texeira who expertly finished.  Another early goal allowed by the Sounders.  FC Dallas controlled the entire opening half and Seattle were lucky to be only down one at the break.

The second half saw Seattle play much better as Clint Dempsey began to take influence over the proceedings linking up with Obafemi Martins and Marco Pappa.  The substitution of Lamar Neagle could not have been any more well timed as the entered in the 57th.  Only a minute later he let fly from long range with a thrilling strike that beat FCD keeper Raul Fernandez into the upper corner.  A clear goal of the week favorite.  Suddenly it was all even and everything was to play for once again.

Dallas reasserted their control on the match though and as the second half wore on produced a lot of the danger via set pieces from Michel and darting runs by Escobar. The eventual breakthrough came in the 78th minute. Another run at the Sounders defense by Escobar unlocked the Seattle back line and sent a centering pass through the six yard box.  Once again the Colombian connected with Texiera, who tapped the cross in behind Seattle's defense for his second goal of the night.

The insurance goal came late on as Blas Perez knocked home one of Michel's fabulous corner kicks. The win gives FCD breathing room in 4th place in the MLS Western Conference, nine points ahead of the Portland Timbers. It also puts them one point behind Real Salt Lake in 3rd place, who play the Whitecaps on Saturday in Vancouver. FC Dallas next game is October 4, also at Vancouver.

Seattle will look to get back on track as they host struggling Chivas USA Saturday evening.
