FC Dallas rolls into the MLS Playoffs tops in West

Mission accomplished.  FC Dallas has won the MLS Western Conference and now head into the playoffs as the top seed.  That means the road to the MLS Cup comes right through Frisco, Texas a place where the team has been almost unbeatable this year.

Sunday was the final regular season MLS match as FC Dallas welcomed a desperate San Jose Earthquake side to town.  San Jose were fighting for their playoff lives and needed a victory to make the playoffs.  They threw everything at the home side as they bossed the opening twenty minutes of both halves.

The pressure paid off as San Jose grabbed an early lead through Quincy Amarikwa in the 13th miunte of play.  The strategy of going right at FCD center back Zach Loyd was paying off as Loyd is well undersized for the position and every high ball seemed to find him.  FC Dallas would weather the storm and get their legs though.

The tide would turn midway through the half and the quality of the Western Conference leaders began to show through.  Mauro Diaz, Fabian Castillo and Michael Barrios were just too much to handle and FCD tied the match before halftime as Castillo blazed down the left flank before sliding the ball across the six.  Mauro Diaz latched on and flicked home.

San Jose would emerge from the break on the front foot once again.  This time they were unable to cash in before Dallas once again took control.  The frustration was starting to show for the Earthquakes as their season was slowly slipping away as the minutes ticked off. A draw would not be enough.  Matia Perez Garcia could not handle the pressure and was sent off in the 67th for a silly violent conduct play.

FC Dallas would cash in and ten minutes later found the winner.  A turnover from San Jose led to the counter with Fabian Castillo slipping a ball that Victor Ulloa would slot home.  San Jose would go quietly from there with Clarence Goodson spending his time whining to the referee at every opportunity. FC Dallas for the 2-1 victory and a franchise record for most wins and most points in a season.

Now comes part two of the FC Dallas mission. The MLS Western Conference Playoffs.  The team gets a week off with a first round bye while Portland, Seattle, Sporting Kansas City and the LA Galaxy fight it out for the right to advance to face Vancouver and Dallas for a spot at MLS Cup 2015.
