Down go the Champs - RSL sends Galaxy packing

There will be no three-peat as Real Salt Lake sent the defending MLS champions Los Angeles Galaxy crashing out of the MLS playoffs Thursday night at Rio Tinto.  Jason Kreis and his RSL side finally won a monster home match after so many failures.

Entering the night trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Real Salt Lake had plenty of work to do.  They set about it early and by halftime they had the matchup all square as Sebastian Velasquez scored in the 35th minute of play.

The second half was wild and open as both sides created chance after chance.  RSL looked to have won it three times late on only to see two shots denied by the woodwork and a seemingly good goal disallowed on a phantom foul call.  Chris Schuler headed off the crossbar while Alvaro Saborio fired off the left post.

The match would need overtime as both teams seasons were on the line.  The extra session finally allowed RSL to get the goal they so deserved.  A Morales freekick sailed to the backpost where three Galaxy players seemed to be in good position to deal with it.  Instead all three were content to let the ball fly through and out of bounds.  Only at the last second Chris Schuler came sliding in and poked home from close range for the winner.

Real Salt Lake advances to the MLS Western Conference Finals to face the red hot Portland Timbers who smashed rivals Seattle.  The first match of the home and home series will be Sunday.
