Chivas USA to shut down operations immediately

We have seen the writing on the wall for months.  A failed experiment with interest and attendance dwindling weekly, Chivas USA is no more.  And with it comes a completely new Los Angeles strategy from Major League Soccer convinced that the LA market can support two squads. MLS will hold a dispersal draft in the near future where the Chivas USA players under contract will be made available to the rest of the league.

A new franchise is on the way though.  On Thursday MLS will announce a new MLS Los Angeles club and ownership group.  The new club will begin play in 2017.

Personally, I see no need for a second Los Angeles team.  The community has never shown they can support two teams and there are many, many deserving US cities that would welcome a franchise and fill stadiums.

Coming in 2015 the MLS will welcome Orlando City SC and New York City FC bringing to 20 the total teams in the league.  A new conference alignment is also on the way for next season.  To allow Orlando City and NYCFC to join the Eastern Conference, both the Houston Dynamo and Kansas City Wizards will move to the Western Conference creating two ten team divisions.
