South American World Cup qualifying update Oct 2016

Ten rounds in the books and only eight matchdays remaining in the South American World Cup qualifying campaign.  Things are as tight as ever as the group of ten teams has dwindled down to seven realistic players for a trip to Russia for the 2018 World Cup.  Round 10 did have a shocker as Paraguay went to Argentina and knocked off one of the big boys winning 1-0.  An 18th minute Derlis Gonzalez goal on the counter would stand up against Argentina who were missing injured  superstar Lionel Messi. The shock defeat leaves Argentina in a bit of an uncomfortable position sitting outside of the automatic four qualifiers with a trip to Brazil looming in the next round. Tough ask for sure and they follow the Brazil trip with a home match to feisty Colombia. Argentina could find themselves in a bit of pickle with two bad results.

Elsewhere, favorites Brazil went top of the group scoring on both sides of halftime in a comfortable 2-0 victory in Venezuela while Chile took care of business at home knocking off Peru 2-1.  The other two matches were entertaining 2-2 draws between Colombia/Uruguay and Bolivia/Ecuador.

Brazil 21
Uruguay 20
Ecuador 17
Colombia 17
Argentina 16
Paraguay 15
Chile 14
Peru  8
Bolivia 8
Venezuela 2

The top four finishers automatically qualify for Russia, but just look how close the table is. Only a single game between 3-7. It is surely going to be a wild finish in CONMEBOL!

Look for fireworks in the next round of games on November 10th as Colombia hosts a desperate Chile while Argentina travels to Brazil. Also #2 clashes with #3 as Ecuador visits Uruguay.
