Real Madrid take FIFA Club World Cup in extra time

Real Madrid captured the FIFA Club World Cup with a 4-2 victory over the Kashima Antlers who made it surprisingly hard for the European powers.  In fact Real had to rally back from a deficit to win it led by a Cristiano Ronaldo hat trick on the night.

The Spanish side did not hold back either as Zinedine Zidane named a strong side for the game that included Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema and the returning Sergio Ramos.  It paid off as Benzema gave Real Madrid a ninth-minute lead with a shot from inside the penalty area into the bottom left corner of the goal after Luka Modric saw his effort parried.

It could have been more as Real Madrid threatened to bury their opponents in the opening half hour.  Benzema, Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Modric all seeing good opportunities saved by Kashima goalkeeper Hitoshi Sogahata. They would rue the missed chances as Kashima tied the match before the break via Gaku Shibasaki's 44th-minute equaliser, which came via a counter-attacking play that ended with a shot from eight yards out.

The shock continued after the restart as seven minutes into the second-half Kashima went in front after Ramos' miscued clearance fell to Shibasaki on the edge of the box and he fired a low shot beyond Keylor Navas and into the corner of the goal.  The goal would spur Real Madrid to action though as they awoke with a vengeance.

The lead was short-lived with Ronaldo putting Real back on level terms from the penalty spot in the 60th minute after Lucas Vazquez had been fouled by Shuto Yamamoto. The Europeans were unable to find the winner in regulation and the FIFA Club World Cup championship would go to extra time.

Real Madrid would make their statement in the extra period as Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice. Eight minutes into the first half of extra time Ronaldo restored Real's lead thanks to a through ball from Benzema, before completing his hat trick six minutes later to seal victory and another trophy for Los Blancos.
