Yes you read that right. Albania beat Portugal on Sunday in the two teams opener of qualifying for the 2016 Euro's. It was just a continuation of poor showings after this summer's World Cup where they crashed against the United States and Germany.
Sure they had no Cristiano Ronaldo, but come on. Albania? Portugal should have enough talent to win this match without Cristiano. Even though Cristiano Ronaldo has been playing regularly for Real Madrid this early season, Portugal coach Paulo Bento opted to leave him out of his squad saying the star was not fit. Ronaldo has been hampered by tendinosis in his left knee the last few months.
Despite outshooting Albania 18 to 3 and holding a 60-40 advantage in possession they still found a way to lose the match as a 52nd minute goal from Bekim Balaj would stand up as the winner. Albania picked up six yellow cards in the game which could come back to haunt them later in qualifying. The Balaj goal was definitely worthy of being a winner as he blasted home a side volley from the middle of the penalty area.
Elsewhere in Euro 2016 qualifying Germany slipped past Scotland 2-1 as Thomas Muller scored both for the world champions. Ireland claimed an important win beating Georgia 2-1 as Everton's Aiden McGeady scored the late winner. Romania also laid a claim to a Euro place thanks to an impressive upset win in Greece.
