You would think they would have figured it out by now. You can spend a bazillion dollars on all the attackers money can buy, but if you give up boat-loads of goals on the defensive end it just doesn't matter. That is the recurring theme for Manchester United this season. Throw money at attackers and give up too many goals to win. Leicester further proved the point on Sunday as they smashed home five on the beleaguered United defense.
Somewhere David Moyes is eating cheese puffs and chuckling in the general direction of Manchester, England.
Despite a 3-1 second half deficit, Leicester rallied with four successive goals to run out 5-3 winners in front of a raucous home crowd at King Power Stadium. When Ander Herrera put United up 3-1 in the 57th it looked like it would be a solid win for the visitors. Angel Di Maria was dominant and Leicester looked like they could not keep up with the potent ManU attack.
Then everything changed as the home side found the net four times in the next twenty minutes of play. Let's face it, young Tyler Blackett is just not ready for this level of play. Somehow Louis van Gaal cannot see it as Blackett is at the heart of giving up goal after goal.
“You never expect that when you're 3-1 ahead and you are two goals ahead for the second time,” van Gaal declared. “You have to kill the game and keep possession but we could not do that. We gave it away with penalties, and you cannot win a game when you do that. I think we created a lot of chances and we made superb goals. But a game lasts 90 minutes and you have to do that for 90 minutes, not 60 minutes.”
The shocking loss leaves Manchester United sitting in 12th place in the standings with only five points to show from five matches. Just not good enough at all and with no real defensive help coming the future looks bleak as much tougher opponents await. New boys Leicester, on the other hand, sit an impressive 7th already on 8 points and possessing a spirit you just have to root for.
