Dramatic Crystal Palace rally kills Liverpool title hopes

For over an hour on Monday Liverpool showed why they are title contenders as they were running wild over Crystal Palace. Goals from Joe Allen, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez had staked them to a solid 3-0 lead.

It looked like a sure three points which would have shifted the pressure onto Manchester City who play Wednesday. Not only were Liverpool in complete control it looked like a matter of how many goals they would score before the final whistle.

Dwight Gayle entered the match in the 65th minute and who could have seen the impact he would have on a 3-0 match. To that point it had been mostly one way traffic as Liverpool looked to be comfortably ahead. The Reds were throwing everything forward trying to cut into a Manchester City goal differential advantage in the standings. In hindsight, they should have just seen the match out and gone home with their three points.

Suddenly within two minutes a 3-0 game was 3-2 as Damien Delaney and Dwight Gayle both scored in lightning fashion. Liverpool were clearly jolted. All discipline out the window as Martin Skrtel was running around like a crazy man rather than manning his center back position. On the third goal Skrtel raced out to contend a header leaving Dwight Gayle alone. Skrtel was late as Glenn Murray chested the ball past Skrtel and onto Gayle who took a touch and slotted the ball past a helpless Mignolet making it 3-3.

In the end Luis Suarez left the field in tears as Stephen Gerrard followed behind with a lost look on his face. The Liverpool title chances had just taken a major hit and in the span on under ten minutes Manchester City saw their EPL title hopes rise dramatically.
