Serie A shutout of Champions League quarterfinals

It definitely has not been a banner year for the Italian Serie A.  It was never more evident than with the thumping of AC Milan by Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.  The Spaniards won both legs and ran out easy 5-1 winners on aggregate.

Thus this year there aren't any Italian entrants into the prestigious Champions League quarterfinal round.  Three teams from Spain, join two each from Germany and England with PSG from France.  It should be a juicy draw as we find out the quarterfinal matchups on Friday.

Juventus is running away with the Serie A this year holding a whopping 14 point lead in the current standings over second place Roma.  The big names of Inter and AC Milan are well off the pace with Milan all the way down in 11th place.  There will be no playing in the big name European competitions next year for them.

The Serie A does still have three squads alive in the Europa League which wraps up their round of 16 this week.  Unfortunately, two or the Italian sides are facing off right now as Juventus and Fiorentina will break their 1-1 draw in the second leg.  Napoli is also alive, but must overturn a 1-0 deficit to Porto.  They will have the home field in the final leg so optimism is high.
