Boateng lifts Bayern Munich at the death

Champions League Soccer.  There just is not too much better!  Today gave us the juicy matchup of world powers Manchester City and Bayern Munich from Germany.  A pair of sides with true title hopes meeting in the opening game of the group stages.  Would we get a wide open affair or a tight defensive battle often times seen in opening group matches?

It took twenty minutes for any real action to get started, must then the chances came in a flurry.    Joe Hart made the first big play of the match as he tipped a Thomas Muller header over the crossbar.  Shortly after Bayern cried penalty as it looked like a Vincent Kompany handball.  Play immediately went to the other end where Dzeko narrowly curled a shot wide of the Neuer post.

Game on.

For twenty minutes Manchester City had the match in a good place.  Enough possession and pressure to keep Bayern from putting their goal under too much pressure.  Could they get the game settled again?  Not really would be the answer.  For the remainder of the first half it was the Joe Hart show as Bayern Munich slowly ramped up the attack.  They were unable to unlock the City defense though and went to the break scoreless.

The second half left everything to play for as both sides chased that important opening three points in the Champions League.  Hart was again called into action in the 55th minute as he went down to save a deflected shot from German World Cup hero Goetze.

It was starting to turn into one way traffic as Manchester City were struggling to even get ahold of the ball.  How long would they be able to hold out?  With fifteen minutes to play Bayern introduced Arjen Robben in an effort to break the stalemate.  City were standing strong though.

Jerome Boateng forced Joe Hart into a smart save as he pushed the the low drive out for a corner.  It was a signal of what was to come as on the ensuing restart the ball fell again to Boateng who fired a perfectly placed shot into the far side netting for the winner.

A heartbreaking way to go down for Manchester City who had fought for 90 minutes to get a result only to lose it at the death.  A big three points for Bayern Munich who needed the win at ome.   A result that certainly doesn't kill City but with Roma also in the group, it makes the margin to advance that much more narrow.
